The GBC Foundation connects donors to projects that reflect their concerns and interests. Donations directed to capital improvements ensure there is space for growing program areas and the best technology and equipment so that George Brown graduates are workplace-ready. The support donors provide to student scholarships and awards can make all the difference to student success.

Support At-Risk Urban Youth

The Toronto Police Service’s 51 Division Community Police Liaison Committee is hosting their 3rd annual Building Bridges Gala to raise funds for their George Brown College scholarship for at-risk youth on Thursday, November 10th, 2011, at 25 Dockside Drive in Toronto. The event includes a cocktail reception, silent auction and a fashion show put on by George Brown College School of Fashion Studies students. Tickets cost $75 each and the cocktail reception begins at 6pm.

Donor Profile: Vince Thomson

Vince Thomson, founder of the De La Salle Scholarship, named the fund for Jean Baptist De La Salle, the founder of the Christian Brothers and a tireless philanthropist who spent his life establishing schools for the poor and training the teachers who worked there. A teacher and associate of the Christian Brothers, Vince Thomson has been working for more than 50 years to make education accessible to marginalized students. He established the scholarship in 1998 as a tribute to De La Salle’s mission and vision with an initial personal gift of $10,000. He asked that the funds be used to assist students in Community Services and Health Sciences to complete their college education.

Thanks to Vince’s tireless efforts, the De La Salle Scholarship Fund now exceeds $800,000. It is Vince’s hope that the value of the Fund will reach $1,000,000.

Creating special events is an integral part of the curriculum for students in the Centre for Hospitality & Culinary Arts (CHCA). Each year, graduating culinary students delight patrons with the Marriage of Food and Wine capstone event, while students in the Special Events Planning and the Bachelor of Applied Business programs create a host of innovative entertainment events.

CHCA student events have raised $72,068 to date. Recognizing the importance of giving back, the students have donated these funds to create endowments so that student awards will be available for future students in their programs for many years to come.
