Caring for children is important work. With more
parents working and a population growth rate in Toronto that is outpacing
all other Canadian cities, there's a growing need for early childhood
professionals.
Program flexibility is a priority at the Centre for Early
Childhood Development. Students may pursue their studies on a full-time
or part-time basis, combining a balance of academic study and field
placements. The following options are available: In Demand
George Brown graduates are in demand because employers
know that they have completed an intensive, well-rounded
program taught by experts in early childhood development.
Career Options
You'll be prepared for the growing range of excellent job opportunities
at child care centres, family resource centres, parenting courses, early
intervention centres, school-based kindergartens, after-school programs,
hospital playrooms, and special needs sites.
Early
Childhood Education - Two-Year Diploma Program -
C100
The two-year Early Childhood Education diploma program
balances academic courses and field placement to
train students in both the theory and practice of working with young
children. By the
time they graduate, students are able to respond
to the changing needs of infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school
age children. Graduates
are qualified to work in a variety of early childhood
settings including child care programs, schools, family resource
programs, home child
care, hospital playrooms and agencies for exceptional
children. Your ECE diploma will give you credit towards degree programs
at other institutions.
It also makes you eligible for certification by
the Association of Early Childhood Educators of Ontario.
Full-time Early Childhood Education Diploma Program - September
Start: Students begin the two-year program in September and
graduate in May of the second year. Their time in the program alternates
between blocks
of classroom study and field placement.
Full-time Early
Childhood Education Diploma Program - January Start: This "fast-track" approach
allows students to begin the two-year program in January and complete
all program requirements,
including academic courses and field placements, in
16 consecutive months. Students in this stream graduate in May along
with the students who started
in September.
Consecutive
Diploma / Bachelor's Degree
in Early Childhood Development
The School of Early Childhood also offers
students the opportunity to pursue a combined diploma and bachelor's
degree in Early Childhood Education. Through a partnership with Ryerson
University, students can enter the third year of the four-year degree
program at Ryerson after successfully completing the first two years
at George Brown College.
Full-time
Early Childhood Assistant -
C105
A one-year Early Childhood Assistant certificate program
trains students to work as assistants in child care
centers, nursery schools or social service agencies, providing home
child care or working
as nannies. Similar to the first year of the Early
Childhood Education diploma program, the program combines academic
study and field placement
to provide students with a foundation in both theory
and practical learning. If they choose, graduates may apply directly
to the second
year of the Early Childhood Education diploma program.
Advanced
Standing
Students with a degree in humanities or social
sciences and work experience in child care may apply to enter directly
to the
second year of the Early Childhood Education diploma
program. A mandatory two-week course in June is required of students
accepted into the second
year of the program. Graduates of the Early Childhood
Assistant certificate program are eligible to enter the second year
of the Early Childhood
Education program with advanced standing and attendance
in the several days of a two-week course in June. Students who have
a college community
services diploma may also be eligible for direct
entry into the second year.
Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition
Students who have gained college level learning outside
the college system can benefit from Prior Learning
Assessment and Recognition. Prior Learning Assessment
and Recognition credit is possible for all
courses except the final field placement. To be considered
college level, learning should:
- include an understanding
of theory as well as practice;
- be useful in a variety
of settings, not just in the particular place it
was acquired; and
- meet the learning outcomes of a
particular course or courses taught in the Early
Childhood Education program
(see student handbook for further details).
Admission Requirements
Applicants to George Brown's Early Childhood Education diploma
and certificate programs must have:
- An Ontario Secondary
School Diploma. Those over 19 years without the academic
prerequisites may apply

Ontario Student Assistance
