The School of Early Childhood has formed many partnerships in our community. A few are highlighted below:

Advanced Special Needs Training
The Creche Child and Family Centre and George Brown College collaborate to offer to Early Childhood Educators advanced specialized training for work with children with special needs. The goal of this initiative is to strengthen the capacity of early childhood educators to respond to children with special needs. The training reflects a philosophy of inclusive treatment of the child with special needs in early childhood settings. The training is a combination of theory and case-based application. The training consists of two major modules, the first composed of eight theory-based study sessions and the second of a series of monthly network meetings.

Reaching In - Reaching Out
Reaching In - Reaching Out is a two year research project conducted by The Child and Family Partnership: The YMCA of Greater Toronto, the University of Guelph, The Creche Child and Family Centre and George Brown College. The project uses human development knowledge about resiliency, adapts it for application with preschool children in licensed child care, evaluates the impact of the newly developed strategies and will disseminate the relevant findings and materials to Canadian and International audiences in child care and related fields. Enhanced resiliency has significant promise for long-term outcomes for children. The project aims to strengthen early childhood development, learning, care and to improve parenting. Casa Loma Child Care Centre at George Brown College is one of the four child care centers in the project involved in the development of tools and curricula.

IDEAS - Emotional Well-Being in Child Care
IDEAS is a vehicle for discussion of emotional well being in child care. It is a partnership between Children's Mental Health, Early Childhood Education and George Brown College. The goal is to support frontline early childhood educators working with infants and young children through the publication of current research and theory in children's mental health and development and relevant application. In the Fall of 1999, IDEAS formed a new partnership with the Canadian Child Care Federation. IDEAS is published as a separate section in the Fall and Spring editions of the Canadian Child Care Federation's magazine: Interaction.
For access to Interaction visit the Canadian Child Care Federation web site.

Advisory Committees
The Program Advisory Committees (PAC) play an important role in the educational process at George Brown College. In the Early Childhood Development program, our committees provide the necessary link between GBC and the community we serve. Advisory committees enable our program to respond thoughtfully to current needs and assist us in the identification of trends and changes in the marketplace.

Committee members participate directly in developing and reviewing programs to ensure coherence with the College's mission and strategic direction. It also assists in maintaining the educational currency of our program by identifying the needs of the business and social sectors served by the College.

George Brown College participates on The Special Needs Advisory Committee in Toronto. And, we're members of the Canadian Child Care Federation.

About Placements
Over 100 agencies provide a variety of field placement opportunities for the School of Early Childhood programs. Field placements offer students the opportunity to gain experience in licensed community-based child care programs, employer-based programs, schools, programs for children with special needs, hospital playrooms, and family resource programs.

George Brown College operates nine innovative child care centres offering training and high quality child care in a variety of facilities. Staffed by fully trained Early Childhood Educators the centres play an important role as lab schools in helping students develop their skills in working with young children. Students must complete at least one field placement at a lab school centre. The lab schools operate in co-operation with ScotiaBank, Waterpark Place, the Baycrest Geriatric Centre, Oxford Properties, and the Toronto District School Board. They include:

  • Casa Loma Child Care Centre
  • Esther Exton Child Care Centre
  • Queen Street Child Care Centre
  • Richmond/Adelaide Child Care Centre
  • Rose Avenue Child Care Centre
  • Ryerson Public School School Age Program
  • Scotia Plaza Child Care Centre
  • University of Toronto, Child Care on Charles Street
  • Waterpark Place Child Care Centre

George Brown College remains committed to operating the child care centres as a fundamental component of the Centre for Early Childhood Development, and as a provider of high quality child care in Toronto.
