Showcase 2005

We have some of the most talented students and faculty in the industry learning and working at the School of Design. Explore the scope of their work expressed through publications, competitions, exhibits, and lectures.


Class of 2006 Year End Show, May 2006

RAW: Design in Process is Rough was the theme for the 2006 Year End Show and Lecture. The evening provided an opportunity to feature the works from the graphic design students in the Class of 2006 to industry design professionals.

The top fifty student design thesis projects were displayed during the year End Show. These included projects from the areas of Corporate Design, Advertising, Environmental Design, Image Design and Multimedia.

The School of Design partnered with the Consulate General of the Netherlands to feature guest speaker Tom Dorresteijn from Studio Dumbar in Holland. Mr. Dorresteijn is a partner in Studio Dumbar and strategist in the field of corporate brand, design and communication. His talk Raw Reality looked at the challenges facing designers in achieving great creative results: clients, business, processes, management and money. The lecture as followed by the awards program for the graduating students in Graphic Design.

Class of 2005 Year End Show and Awards, April 27, 2005

The Year End Show and Lecture attracted around four hundred attendees to this year’s event held at the Distillery District’s Fermentation Cellar on April 27, 2005. The evening provided an opportunity to feature the works from the graphic design students in the Class of 2005 to family, friends and industry design professionals.

The top fifty student design thesis projects were displayed during the year End Show. These included projects from the areas of Corporate Design, Advertising, Environmental Design, Image Design and Multimedia. There were ten exhibition kiosks running the digital media projects and portfolios.

Guest Speaker: JEROEN BARENDSE

Mr. Barendse was also the guest speaker on the evening of April 27. Mr. Barendse’s presentation focused on his early works in design and typography as well as more current work in the area of interactive digital installations and design. The lecture as followed by the awards program for the graduating students in Graphic Design.

Jeroen Barendse graduated from the Graphic Design program at the Academy of the Arts in Utrecht and the Academy of Arts in Arnhem. He undertook an internship with designer Lex Reitsma and worked are a freelancer for Roelef Mulder. He currently teaches Graphic Design at the Academy of Arts in Arnhem and is one of the founding members of LUST.

Third year students had the opportunity to spend one on one time with Mr. Barendse to review their design thesis projects as part of the workshop held on April 26 from 1pm to 4pm.

Awards Ceremony

Following the guest lecture, the awards for the graduating graphic design students were presented. This year’s award winners included:

Dean’s Award of Excellence
for demonstrating superior academic performance, active involvement in extra-curricular activities and leadership in the community (Recipient: Jenny Lo)

Umbra Award of Excellence
for demonstrating outstanding creativity and design excellence in the graphic design program (Recipient: Joseph Im)

Albina Skibicka Memorial Bursary
for demonstrating outstanding editorial skills, enthusiasm for the industry and a spirit of caring for the community in the graphic design program. The award was established in 1999 whereby Albina Skibicka was an employee of Laurentian TechnoMedia which is now currently known as IT World Canada. (Recipient: David Abrahams)

Director’s Community Service Award
for contribution to the community on design initiatives
(Recipient: Stephanie Fox)

Best of Show Awards

Presented to the top students for their design thesis work as selected by industry. Selected works are represented in the following 5 categories:

    First prize Jamie Mageau; Second prize Joseph Im; Third prize Mike Nitsopoulos; Honorable Mentions: Janice Krangle and Brendan Fisher

  • Advertising
    First prize Eric Schmidt; Second prize Chris Cousineau; Third prize Stephanie Fox; Honorable mention: Brandon McArthur

  • Environmental Design
    First prize Adam Harris; Second prize Jonathan Kalisse

  • New Media Design
    First Prize Kati Utiainen; Second prize Anthony Grant; Third prize Sean Gaudron

  • Image Design
    First prize Vahagn Stephanian; Second prize Dave Watkins; Third prize Daria Konioukhova; Honorable mentions: Arpineh Sookiassian, Eric McBain
