Art
Showcase course (Art 1023)
|
Course showcases top industry talent: Art and Design Foundation
students with Professor Elve Foote-Weelink (left), and speakers Richard St. John (third from left) and Don Fraser (right)
in the Art Showcase course.
The Art Showcase course (Art 1023) brings a series of notable speakers into the college to inform students
about career possibilities and paths. St. John and Fraser kicked off the series with a lively session about college survival
skills. Fraser, a former Durham College professor, gave out practical tips for succeeding at college, while St. John spoke
about how to succeed in life, based on interviews with successful people. Students need to find their passion, work hard, push
out of their comfort zone, and always look for new ideas, he said in a fast-paced, humourous presentation.
"If you're a c' student don't panic," St. John said, "because the word success has two
c's and no a's." |

Report
Homophobic Violence, Period

The RHVP – Report Homophobic Violence, Period – Campaign is an initiative of the Toronto
Police Services Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) Community Consultative Committee in partnership with
numerous organizations in the Toronto LGBT community, youth and health services and the City of Toronto.
The George Brown College School of Design is especially pleased to be partnered in this project, as the students participating
in the 3rd year work-study design program, StudioLab, were given the opportunity to design and produce the graphically powerful
poster and brochure components of the campaign, as well as contribute graphic content to the RHVP Public Service Announcement.
In consultation with Toronto Police Service Liaison Officer, Constable Thomas Decker, and the various LGBT organizations directly
involved in the project, and with guidance from instructor Jenny Lemieux, StudioLab students Justin Lee, Akua Agadzi, Francis
Luta, Nick Keogh, Joseph Liu and Elena Kromska developed the final graphic and distinctive “RHVP” text concept
to powerfully convey the message of the campaign – that all hate-motivated crime is a serious offence and any victims
and witnesses to such events should report them, and feel completely confident in doing so, to Police and the various other
services available to assist them in the reporting process.

This campaign successfully culminated in an exciting media launch at Toronto Police Services headquarters on Friday, June
20th marking the commencement of Pride Week, with a full display of RHVP campaign material and StudioLab students in attendance.
In September, Toronto Police Services and LGBT organizations hope to gear up the RHVP Campaign again in Toronto District
School Board high schools.
