Employers sense the benefit of the centre’s meaningful connection to industry, developed through unique projects and field placements

The StudioLab program creates a studio environment that allows students to work on real projects and with real clients. Students are taught skills such as how to present themselves in front of a client, how to prepare for field education, and how to respond to deadlines in a professional manner, by taking on various roles that are available in a design studio (project manager, lead graphic designer, information architect, etc.).

The StudioLab also specializes in providing design services to non-profi t and other organizations around the city with services they need at prices they can afford. Students are hired through the School of Design and work closely with the client in a co-creation process to develop concepts and designs that respond effectively to their needs in a holistic way. Students work under the mentorship of an industry professional to help them polish their work and present it in a manner that meets industry standards, and a Project Coordinator who teaches them how to create project proposals, schedules, and budgets, and communicate effectively with the client.

In addition to providing graphic design, web, and branding services to the College, the StudioLab has worked with the Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts (now the Sony Centre), Sharon Temple Museum Society, Ballet Jörgen Canada, Scouts Canada, the Exhibition Place, the Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada (BOMA), the Virtual Museum of Canada (VMC), the Toronto Police, and the Toronto Centre for the Arts.
