Description  

George Brown College’s Financial Services degree provides you with a challenging and rewarding four-year program, combining the benefits of applied, practical education with a bachelor’s degree. It is the only bachelor’s degree in Financial Services in Ontario that includes majors in Personal Financial Planning and Accounting.

Whether you are seeking a career as a professional accountant or financial planner, this program provides the skills, knowledge and real-world experience to help you succeed.

This exciting program offers the following additional benefits:

  • One mandatory co-op work term and two optional co-op work terms built into the program.
  • Integrated computer-based learning throughout your four years.
  • Your own personal notebook computer to use in class and at home, from the start of semester 3 through to your last semester.
  • Accounting, banking management, administration and financial planning theory, as well as the practice of applying concepts in the real world through the use of today’s current, industry-leading software applications.
  • A state-of-the-art facility that includes network-ready wireless classrooms and study areas.
  • Curriculum that is current and has been developed in association with the major banks, financial planning firms, the Certified General Accountants Association of Ontario, the Financial Planners Standards Council and the Canadian Securities Institute.


Majors  

  Personal Financial Planning 

Starting in the second year of the program, students must select a major. The Financial Services degree currently offers two majors:

  • Personal Financial Planning
  • Accounting

The Bachelor of Applied Business degree with a specialization in personal financial planning is on the Financial Planning Standards Council (FPSC) list of approved providers of CFP® Core Curriculum education programs. Upon successful completion of the George Brown program, students will be qualified candidates to sit for the new Financial Planning Exam 1 and Exam 2 – required steps toward obtaining a CFP® designation. More information on the CFP® designation and its requirements may be obtained at the FPSC website (www.fpsccanada.org). In addition, co-op work experience gained in the program may count toward the work experience required to obtain a CFP® designation.

Students in this major will also take courses that are designed to assist with their preparation to write the Canadian Securities Course (CSC®) Exams 1 and 2 offered by the Canadian Securities Institute.

Note: The qualifications, requirements, processes and costs related to obtaining CFP® certification or completing the CSC® exams are established by the Financial Planning Standards Council (www.fpsccanada.org) and the Canadian Securities Institute (www.csi.ca), respectively, not George Brown College. Accounting 

The Bachelor of Applied Business degree with a specialization in accounting will provide students with the skills needed to work in competitive business environments that are continually growing in complexity and globalization. The accounting specialization was designed in consultation with key industry organizations to assist graduates who wish to enhance their careers by pursuing the following professional paths:

  • Chartered Accountant profession – see the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (www.icao.on.ca)
  • Certified General Accountant profession – see the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (www.cga-canada.org)
  • Certified Management Accountant profession – see the Certified Management Accountants (CMA) Ontario (www.cma-ontario.org)

Notebook Program The BAB Financial Services degree combines the power of notebook computing with industry-specific training, an applied professional focus and co-op work experience. Starting in your second year, you will have use of a College notebook loaded with the standard soft- ware applications used within the financial services industry.
The BAB curriculum has been designed around the use of notebook computers. Many lessons have been structured to allow you to work on specific projects in class and solve real-life business problems using industry-standard tools. Outside of class, on or off campus, you will use your notebook to communicate with faculty, classmates and friends, organize your studies, access learning materials and conduct web-based research.
The annual notebook fee for 2011–2012 is $1,000, plus a one-time refundable $400 deposit due when enrolling in the third semester.
