The George Brown Chef School opens its doors to the industry for many special events and ceremonies. With our partners, students are encouraged to get involved in various fundraisers and competitions and make those important industry connections. From celebrity chef visits to intense culinary competitions, there is always something happening at the chef school.



"Flavours of the World" Dinner Series at The Chefs' House

Join us for these special evenings when we feature multi-course dinners from a select city, region or country from around the globe. Each month we celebrate a new "flavour" and invite the public to join visiting Chefs as they share the tastes of their home countries at The Chefs' House:

  • September 29, 2009: 
    "Flavours of Mexico" Multi-Course Dinner with Oaxacan Chef Pilar Cabrera Arroyo

    In her first visit to Toronto, Chef Pilar Cabrera Arroyo will be sharing well-preserved traditions with dishes that tell the tales of ancient, native peoples.  Join us for dinner and a rare glimpse into the place and the dishes that satisfy both body and soul!

  • October 6, 2009: 
    "Flavours of Chile" Multi-Course Dinner with Chilean Chef Christopher Carpentier

    A charismatic visionary, Chef Christopher Carpentier made his first Santiago restaurant. 'Agua', one of the 'Best 50 Restaurants in the World' (as per the Condé Nast Traveller). He is renowned for 'wowing' his audiences with sophisticated and modern Chilean cuisine. Don't miss out!

  • November 23, 2009:
    "Flavours of India" Multi-Course Dinner with Indian Chef Debu Saha

    Originally from Calcutta, Chef Debu Saha honed his exceptional culinary skills at five-star hotels in India and the Middle East before moving to Toronto to open the Biryani House and Debu's Nouvelle Indian Cuisine. Join us as Chef Saha presents the classic tastes of India in new and exciting ways!

George Brown student wins national Almost Famous Chef Competition

Student Bryan McMillan won the 6th Annual S. Pellegrino Almost Famous Chef Canadian Regional Competition held Sat., Feb. 2 at George Brown. Bryan, a fourth semester Culinary Management student mentored by Chef Charlton Alvares , will now go on to represent Canada at the Finals Competition in Napa Valley in March.  

At the Finals event, Bryan will vie against nine other competitors from the United States for the chance to win a $10,000 US cash prize, an exclusive opportunity to work with a nationally-renowned chef, and the honour of becoming this year's S. Pellegrino Almost Famous Chef.

TORONTO, Feb. 4 /CNW/ - You could cut the tension with a knife as Toronto's Bryan McMillan was announced the winner of the 6th Annual S.Pellegrino Almost Famous Chef(SM) Canadian Regional Competition held today at George Brown College in Toronto. Bryan will now go on to represent Canada at the Finals Competition in Napa Valley in March. At the Finals event, he will vie against nine other competitors from the United States for the chance to win a $10,000 US cash prize, an exclusive opportunity to work with a nationally-renowned chef, and the honour of becoming this year's S.Pellegrino Almost Famous Chef. Faced with heated competition, six culinary peers representing George Brown College, Institut de tourisme et d'hôtellerie du Québec and The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Vancouver, were given two hours to prepare their one-of-a-kind signature dishes. In the end, Bryan's recipe had the most sizzle, impressing professional chef and media judges with his innovative creation of Porcini-Dusted Halibut, Braised Short Ribs. "It is a privilege to represent Canada at such a prestigious event," said Bryan. "The next level of the Almost Famous Chef competition will provide me with an extraordinary opportunity to hone my skills as I go head to head with the top culinary students in North America."

The Almost Famous Chef Competition was created by S.Pellegrino® Sparkling Natural Mineral Water as a way to encourage mentoring between top culinary students, highly respected chefs and influential media. This year's Canadian Regionals judging panel was comprised of an impressive list of celebrity chefs and media, including Toronto's Jason Rosso of The Distillery Restaurant Corp. and Daniel Schick of Le Royal Meridien King Edward Hotel, Vancouver's Lynda Larouche of Watermark Restaurant on Kits Beach, and Montreal's Frédéric St-Aubin of Club 357c. Media judges were Elizabeth Baird of Canadian Living Magazine, Dick Snyder of City Bites Magazine and Roseanna Caira of Foodservice & Hospitality. The S.Pellegrino(TM) Almost Famous Chef(SM) Finals Competition will take place in Napa Valley from March 7-10.
