Assessment
The key to occupational success comes from the combination of interests,
skills and abilities, personal style and values that you bring to work.
Determining where we "fit in" is what vocational assessment
is all about. By using information gained from assessment instruments,
we can work together to determine which career options will most likely
offer personal, financial and career success.

Tips that help you get ahead faster
- Know yourself, your goals, values and skills.
In order to market yourself effectively determine what exactly it is that you
are selling. What is it that makes you an outstanding candidate for the job?
Don’t leave it up to the employer to figure out the job that best suits you.
Always assess your skills from an employer’s perspective.
- Develop a tailored résumé.
The main purpose of the résumé is to get you an interview! With that in mind,
market your skills to gain interest from the employer. Select relevant skills
and activities that draw attention and always construct the résumé so that it’s
easy to read without any errors.
- Research the market.
Research gives you insight as to what the employer is looking for when
screening résumés and interviewing applicants. Research can also widen your
scope of the industry you are interested in, the educational requirements, the
salary scale, and current trends.
- Expand your network.
In today’s market you need to develop the right contacts! Keep in mind that
every member of your work search network has the potential to know
someone, who knows someone, who can get you a foot in the employment
door!
- Nail the interview.
If you are pursuing work that you are excited about – show it! Know why you
are a good fit for the job and how you can contribute. Know about the
company/organization in order to talk about their business intelligently.
Prepare stories that illustrate your strengths.
- Don’t forget etiquette.
“Please” and “thank you” go a long way. Go even further with a firm
handshake and plenty of eye contact.
- Always follow up.
Follow up with an email reiterating your interest and thanking the interviewer
for his or her time.
