|

With the generous contributions of
our students, staff and faculty, George Brown College has
exceeded its goal of raising $100,295.00 for the 2004 United
Way campaign.
We raised $80,283 with 194 individual
donations and $20,012 through various spirit events bringing
us to a remarkable $100,295.
Many thanks to the individuals who
submitted pledge forms, to the departments that organized
and ran successful events, to the various sponsors who
donated prizes and giveaways and to those who helped make
this campaign such a success.
Our contribution will support a vital
network of 200 social and health service agencies who operate
to help rebuild the lives of those in need.

You're invited to get involved
in the college-wide PEACE of Cake 2004 campaign.
Share your Goodwill!
|
Last
year the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism baked, packed
and shipped 500 fruitcakes to Canadian peacekeepers stationed
overseas for the holidays and called it a "PEACE
of Cake." The response from both at home and abroad
was so positive that "PEACE of Cake" is back for
2004 in what organizers are hoping will become an annual
tradition.

ENTLIGHTENING A DARK CORNER
Leaders show way on mental health
Toronto Star, Oct. 28, by JIM COYLE
|

|
|
Think about it. What two questions do
people commonly ask each other during that feeling-out waltz
in the moments after introduction?
What do you do? Where do you live?
The answers - jobs and addresses - say
loads about us. They suggest income level, education, certainly
our social status. They give clues to tastes, our self-image,
whether we're seekers of security or adventure.

Stephen Lewis touched
a powerful nerve among the 400+ GBC staff who attended his
address during Staff Celebration Week in 2003. At that time,
we promised to help Stephen in his tireless efforts to stop
the AIDS pandemic in Africa.
On Wednesday October
20 from 2:00 to 4:30 PM, Stephen Lewis returns
to GBC. The College has declared this International
Education Day at George Brown.
The location is St.
Paul’s Anglican Church, 227 Bloor Street East (south
side of Bloor, west of Jarvis).
We're planning an event
that can accommodate 1200 GBC students and staff. To date,
over 20 faculty members have each agreed to bring 25 of their
students to the event and to build this into their fall curriculum
so that students integrate the experience into their learning
program. We are looking for 15 more professors who are willing
to bring 25 of your students to this exciting event and to
make it part of your fall curriculum.
To register or to get more
information, call John Porter at ext 2122 or Michael Cooke
at ext 2569.
