George Brown
Location, location, location: George Brown College's three
downtown campuses are just a short walk or subway ride from Toronto's
financial district, tourist district, hospital zone, government
offices and, of course, a thriving cultural scene. "George
Brown calls itself the City College because our students and
our programming are a reflection of the diversity of the city,"
says president Frank Sorochinsky. "Our close relationships
with the community make the learning experience a very rich one."
With so much nearby, interesting work opportunities exist for
students both before and after graduation. The financial planning
program, for example, is supported by 10 financial service firms,
including Fidelity Investments and ScotiaMcLeod Inc. "The
companies helped establish the program with funding, as well
as curriculum development and work placements," says Sorochinsky.
And to ensure that graduates are meeting employer expectations,
the college recently invested millions of dollars in such facilities
as its graphic design studio, computer-assisted design and manufacturing
labs, and state-of-the-art kitchens.
The college's Hospitality and Tourism Centre is the largest
and most diversified training ground in the country, with more
than 20 specialized management, apprenticeship and skills-based
programs. Several are unique to Canada, including chef training
in aboriginal and Chinese cuisine, and an Italian post-diploma
cooking program with a three-month placement in Italy. Rounding
out the culinary offerings are advanced pastry arts and a sommelier
course, as well as food and nutrition management-a one-year program
leading to supervisory positions in retirement homes and hospitals.
"If you arc going to be in the food business in Canada,
it is very good to go to George Brown because you need to learn
about Canadian standards," says graduate Bonnie Stern, who
has her own cooking school, television show and newspaper column.
George Brown offers one of the country's most comprehensive
programs in the area of community services and health sciences.
Over 2,000 students are enrolled in a range of health-care programs,
including nursing, Counselling and dental technology. Again,
location is key as students do their fieldwork or clinical placements
at the hospitals, clinics and community agencies in downtown
Toronto. "The trend is towards community-based care,"
says Sorochinsky. "And George Brown is well positioned to
meet those needs in health care and community services."
Arts-oriented students are encouraged to keep their eye trained
not just on their craft but on the ledger as well. To this end,
George Brown combines creative arts and business in the same
faculty: piano technology, jewelry repair, dance, theatre arts
and fashion management are just a few of the programs where students
graduate ready to face the rigorous demands of the Canadian arts
and cultural industry.
On the business side, the college offers a wide range of programs
such as accounting, logistics management, health information
management and a post-diploma in sport and event marketing. Meanwhile,
George Brown offers a number of technology programs, including
the CD-ROM-based distance education program in electronics, which
was the 1998 winner of the Association of Canadian Community
Colleges Program Excellence Award. In total, roughly 5,000 students
from all over the world take some form of distance education
courses at George Brown, and the number is expected to grow.
"We are very focused on helping shape the workforce of the
future," says Sorochinsky. "The enthusiasm of youth
for learning, the desire to get skills and the rapidity of change
in the workplace is such that colleges need to provide services
to meet a wide range of students." A city college, with
no boundaries.
