Student success in college requires well developed learning skills and attitudes (such as being able to work independently,
participate in a team, be well-organized, develop good work habits, and show initiative). These skills are as important as prior academic
achievement. Applicants should have thoroughly developed these skills and attitudes before beginning their college programs.

OUR PROGRAM
This program prepares Registered Nurses to function as competent team members in the perioperative operating room. The Theory and Clinical components are done concurrently during the 16-week program. The program is organized in two phases.
Phase I consists of 16 weeks of online theory delivery, including:
- adherence to current ORNAC standards, principles and application
- surgical anatomy
- intensive study of surgical interventions and surgical technologies, including indications and complications
- role of the circulating nurse
- role of the scrub nurse
- clinical lab work skills completed at George Brown College (if applicable)
Phase II includes 320 hours of clinical exposure. This requires clinical placement for 12 weeks at a minimum of three days per week. This is done concurrently with the Theory course starting at week 5. (Test 1 must be passed in order to enter the Phase II Clinical.) Clinical lab skills are preceptored at the clinical hospital if applicable. Students are exposed to several services (e.g., General Surgery, Urology, Gynecology, Plastics, ENT and Orthopedics).
The program is delivered online via Elluminate, with weekly discussions and assignments posted through the College WebCT/Blackboard. A reflective clinical essay is required at the end of the course.
Clinical experiences are scheduled in the hospital operating room in which you are working.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
Clinical Pre-placement Health Form
Students must meet all medical and legal requirements for this program outlined on the Pre-Placement Health Form. This may take up to four months. To see those requirements and to download your program health form visit www.georgebrown.ca/preplacement. Students who are unable to comply will be unable to complete their field placement and therefore unable to graduate. All costs, service fees and fines associated with the overall health form requirements are the responsibility of the student. For more information, please contact Suzette Martinuzzi, Pre-placement Coordinator at smartinu@georgebrown.ca or visit www.georgebrown.ca/preplacement
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR Level-HCP) Certification
All students must successfully complete the approved CPR Level-(HCP) course and it must be renewed every two years, before commencing the clinical lab courses. These requirements are a pre-requisite for entry into the clinical practicum.
Students will not be eligible to participate in the clinical area if they do not hold current CPR level-(HCP) certificate. It is the student’s responsibility to arrange for and take the CPR course outside of regularly scheduled classes. You may register and take this course at any Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) approved First Aid Training establishment available in your area. The CPR level-(HCP) certificate must be presented to the student’s assigned clinical professor on or before the first clinical practice day of each semester in order for the student to take part in clinical practice in the agency assigned. All costs, service fees and fines associated with this requirement are the responsibility of the student. For more information, please download and read carefully your program health form at www.georgebrown.ca/preplacement or contact Suzette Martinuzzi, Pre-placement Coordinator at smartinu@georgebrown.ca
