Student success in college requires well developed learning skills and attitudes (such as being able to work independently,
participate in a team, be well-organised, develop good work habits, and show initiative). These skills are as important as prior academic
achievement. Applicants should have thoroughly developed these skills and attitudes before beginning their college programs.

OUR PROGRAM
The Hearing Instrument
Specialist program at George Brown College provides students with an opportunity to study and develop clinical skills that will enable them
to test hearing, select appropriate hearing instruments and dispense these aids to people in need. All clients must have a prescription from a physician
or an audiologist prior to being fitted with a hearing aid. Students will learn theory and skills related to testing hearing, and hearing aid technology
and pathology. Most courses will involve laboratory experiences. Health promotion strategies will be integrated with business management, interviewing
and counselling techniques.
Students will learn to work within an interprofessional learning environment fostering interprofessional skills.
YOUR CAREER
Graduates of the program may be employed by a variety of hearing aid vendors, such as Manufacturing, Audiologists, Hearing Instrument
Specialists or other large dispensaries.
Graduates must complete 1,000 hours of internship before they are eligible to be registered as an Authorizer with the Assistive Devices
program of the Ministry of Health. If a graduate has the ambition to open their own clinic, then an additional 2,000 hours of a vendorship
must be completed.
Effective July 2007, clinicians wishing to recommend hearing aids in the province of Ontario must write an ILE exam to be an HIS member
of AHIP.
AHIP, the Association of Hearing Instrument Practitioners (www.ahip.ca), is the self-governing body for non-audiologist hearing health
practitioners of Ontario.
