GEORGE BROWN FULL-TIME PROGRAMS GUIDE 2010-2011

Liberal Arts & Sciences

Assaulted Women's and Children's Counsellor/Advocate Diploma - Part Time

This program is unique in Canada.

This three-year part-time program provides students with a feminist analysis of the political and counselling issues related to violence against women and children. Students learn to be agents for change in community education, political action and law reform by providing counselling and advocacy to women and children who have experienced or are experiencing violence. A major portion of the program is the fieldwork component. Students are eligible to do part of their fieldwork in international placements in Jamaica, Cuba and some other countries.

Career Opportunities:

Graduates work in a variety of settings, including transition and interval houses, rape crisis centres, women’s health centres, community centres and victim/witness programs.

Future Study Options:

Graduates are eligible to apply for advanced standing at York University in Toronto, and at Hilbert College, a university in Hamburg, New York. Graduates may apply to complete a second diploma in a related George Brown College program in a reduced time frame (e.g. the Social Service Worker or the Community Worker programs).

Admission requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or mature student status.
  • Applicants are required to complete a questionnaire. Selected candidates will be invited to attend an interview.
  • Mature students are required to take an English pre-admission test
  • 80 hours of paid or volunteer work experience in women’s services is preferred
  • Mature students with personal or volunteer or employment experience in women’s services are given preference for admission into this program

Please call 416-415-5000 x3690 to obtain a questionnaire and course details.

Note: Some of our student placement partners require students in this program to have a police reference check completed before their field placement. These reference checks, which can take several weeks, are done to protect the clientele of these agencies, who are considered “vulnerable persons” under the law. The fees for the reference checks vary and must be paid by the student. Students are responsible for ensuring that the check covers appropriateness for “individuals being employed and/or volunteering who will be working with vulnerable person(s).” Students who are unable to provide a clear police reference check may find that their choice of placements is limited.

Diploma completion:

Students attend classes every Monday from noon – 8:30 pm at St. James Campus and take 4 courses each semester. Classes start in September and finish in June. This program takes approximately 3 and a half years to complete. Students are required to complete the program within five years.
