GEORGE BROWN FULL-TIME PROGRAMS GUIDE 2009-2010

Liberal Arts & Sciences

Assaulted Women's and Children's Counsellor/Advocate Diploma - Direct Entry to Second Year Option

This program is unique in Canada.

The Direct Entry Option of the Assaulted Women's and Children's Counsellor/Advocate Program at George Brown College builds on previous learning, offering an intensive,  combination of woman-focused, feminist counselling and political action courses that include the skills of support and activism needed to advocate for women, their children, and their communities.

In addition to the full-time and Continuing Education options, the AWCCA Program offers this individualized Direct Entry to Second Year Option to eligible students who have undergraduate degrees or who are graduates of Social Service Worker or Community Worker Diploma programs. If students apply while they are still full-time students in a George Brown College program, an OCAS application is not required. However, all other aspects of the application process are required. All applicants, whether for Year 1, Year 2, or Continuing Education are asked to complete a questionnaire and attend a group interview.

In addition to the questionnaire and interview, applicants who seek Direct Entry to Second Year must provide transcripts and any relevant documentation about their previous learning and work experience.  Direct Entry students are required to take additional courses where their previous education and field experience is not equivalent to AWCCA core first year classes. Applicants may want to develop a portfolio describing their past field/work experience in order to capture their skills and knowledge and attach this to their questionnaire.

Career Opportunities:

Graduates work in a variety of settings, including transition and interval houses, rape crisis centres, women's health centres, community centres and victim/witness programs.

Admission requirements

  • Applicants are required to provide past transcripts and relevant documentation supporting their application to Year 2 of the AWCCA Program.

Please call 416-415-5000 x2121 to obtain a questionnaire and course details.

Note: Some of our student placement partners require students in this program to have a police reference check completed before their field placement. These reference checks, which can take several weeks, are done to protect the clientele of these agencies, who are considered “vulnerable persons” under the law. The fees for the reference checks vary and must be paid by the student. Students are responsible for ensuring that the check covers appropriateness for “individuals being employed and/or volunteering who will be working with vulnerable person(s).” Students who are unable to provide a clear police reference check may find that their choice of placements is limited.

Diploma completion:

Students enter directly into Year 2 of the full-time program with additional Year 1 courses as needed – see full-time calendar. Classes start in September and finish in April.
