Student success in college requires well developed learning skills and attitudes (such as being able to work independently,
participate in a team, be well-organised, develop good work habits, and show initiative). These skills are as important as prior academic
achievement. Applicants should have thoroughly developed these skills and attitudes before beginning their college programs.

OUR PROGRAM
The Gemmology program teaches you to analyze and classify a large number of gem materials, both natural and artificially created.
The program focuses on analyzing chemical and physical characteristics of gem and gem-like materials, and identifying different gems.
The gem materials are classified into categories according to their desirable characteristics, which eventually determine the value
of the gems. To accomplish the identification and classification, you use a number of specially designed instruments such as microscopes,
spectroscopes, refractometers, polariscopes and others.
Many semester 2 courses have semester 1 prerequisites. Please consult with your faculty advisor or review the Gemmology program pathway
document posted on the website at www.georgebrown.ca/jewellery.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Visual acuity and accurate colour rendition are also essential traits for success in Gemmology.
YOUR FUTURE STUDY OPTIONS
Some credits are transferable to the Jewellery programs.
YOUR CAREER
Graduates of this program find employment in jewellery enterprises at manufacturing wholesale and retail levels. With some additional
training and experience in the jewellery industry, some become jewellery appraisers. The program combines the best features of both
the British and American certification programs. Many graduates write the Canadian Gemmological Association FCGA exams and the British
FGA exams to obtain internationally recognized professional designations.
