Student success in college requires well developed learning skills and attitudes (such as being able to work independently, participate in a team, be well-organised, develop good work habits, and show initiative). FAST-TRACK TO A GREAT CAREER IN HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

Change is inevitable in today’s business world. As companies embrace the challenges of adapting and enhancing their organizations, they must look to the strength of their people. An organization’s success depends largely on attracting and retaining the right people, developing employees to achieve maximum potential and ensuring their efforts are rewarded.

The postgraduate Human Resources Management program at George Brown College blends business-related theory and practical application to highlight how HR functions as a strategic partner in business. Upon completion of the program, you will be able to:

  1. Understand how employment legislation impacts human resources
  2. Design human resources policies and programs
  3. Facilitate employee training and development
  4. Ensure health and safety in the workplace
  5. Recruit and select employees
  6. Promote diversity
  7. Manage performance
  8. Recommend strategic change initiatives
  9. Develop a total rewards system
  10. Manage employee/labour relations
  11. Create a comprehensive human resources plan

Our program enables you to work towards obtaining the professional designation of Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) (www.cchra-ccarh.ca) offered through the Human Resources Professional Association of Ontario (www.hrpao.org).

Students in this co-op program graduate with a postgraduate certificate and four months of work experience.

See the Cooperative Education web site for more information.

FUTURE STUDY OPTIONS

For those students wishing to pursue an optional Training and Development Stream (TDS), George Brown College offers a certificate in Training and Development. Further information on the course requirements to complete the TDS is outlined in the curriculum planner at the bottom of this web page.  This stream will lead toward the Certified Training and Development Professional designation (CTDP) offered through the Canadian Society of Training and Development (CSTD). Refer to www.cstd.ca/certification for additional information on this designation.

For information on additional future study options, see transferguide.georgebrown.ca.

Paul Koshy"(At George Brown) we learned the importance of needs analyses, following the consultative process and building a project framework – and we practiced all three. We used a case study method which mirrored the real world very closely, and in some instances the cases were real. My co-op term was one of the most eye-opening experiences because I was able to apply what we learned in the classroom right away."

Paul Koshy
(2007 graduate, Human Resources Management)
Coordinator of Organization Development, Indigo Books & Music Inc.
