OUR PROGRAM

You’ve got the background, the drive and the imagination – let George Brown College help you achieve your goal with this innovative Research Commercialization and Innovation (Postgraduate) 12-month program. It will transform your academic credentials into a springboard to a rewarding new career in research commercialization. You’ll learn how to move projects from ideas to marketplace realities. Your advanced degree (bachelors, masters or doctorate level) will be the foundation for this exciting career, which will then be coupled with George Brown’s practical education and real-world project experience in research commercialization. Students will study at George Brown’s research labs in health, environmental studies, energy, information and communications technology (ICT), advanced manufacturing and other fields.

You’ll acquire these essential career skills:

  • evaluating new concepts emerging from research
  • understanding markets
  • growing opportunities and managing threats
  • assessing when to go public with a new technology
  • business and entrepreneurial skills
  • managing intellectual property issues
  • understanding patent law (also patenting alternatives)
  • identifying market niches
  • conducting market and competitive research
  • gathering competitive intelligence
  • sales and networking skills
  • managing research and development finances
  • leadership
  • building and managing effective teams

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Our intensive program has been carefully structured to give you the most in the least amount of time. Our primary goal is to see you successfully launch a new career in research commercialization. So you won’t just graduate with a certificate, you’ll have the skills and confidence you need, and a professional portfolio of accomplishments in the field that will open doors for you in industry.

Key program components are:

  • career portfolio development
  • online/in-class/lab learning – 42 weeks over three semesters
  • customized, industry-sponsored, real-world field work on a research project
  • employment counselling and job search support, including industry mentorship
  • three three-hour post-graduation workshops, including coaching, networking and optional site visits
  • extensive support after graduation, including web-based supports
  • problem-based learning approach
  • technical and scientific training
  • English language assessment
  • occupation-specific English language training

YOUR CAREER

Graduates are prepared for careers in industrial research and development, scientific and technical enquiry, consulting, public and institutional policy advising, and entrepreneurship. Graduates will be equipped to apply for positions in the following list (based on background and preference): Research Director, Research and Development Manager, Business Development Manager, Research Liaison and Information Manager, Research Project Manager, Commercialization Manager, Technology Transfer Manager, Intellectual Property Manager, Procurement and Contract Manager, Invention and Innovation Manager, Industrial Liaison Officer, Policy Director, Scientific Advisory, Consultant, Business Owner/Entrepreneur.
