Student success in college requires well developed learning skills and attitudes (such as being able to work independently, participate in a team, be well-organised, develop good work habits, and show initiative). These skills are as important as prior academic achievement. Applicants should have thoroughly developed these skills and attitudes before beginning their college programs.

Fashion Techniques and Design program at George Brown College focuses on the sewing and drafting skills used in the fashion industry. The program simulates, as closely as possible, the industry’s standards, practices and facilities. Students use industrial machines to sew garments. They learn the essentials of pattern making and pattern grading. Course-based registration will give you more flexible options. Elective computer courses give students the opportunity to make markers and draft patterns on computers using leading-edge technology.

An annual fashion show highlights successful individual student projects. Students are graded on their abilities, creativity and end results. Local and national design competitions and field trips in the industry allow students to pursue their fashion interests.

Note: This program requires students to sew extensively. Both sewing ability and access to a sewing machine are expected from students.

Your Career

Graduates can go on to careers as patternmakers and graders, assistant designers, garment technology, computer operators, assistant buyers, stylists, sales staff and store managers. Workplaces range from small specialty shops to large design houses and retail chains. Many graduates are entrepreneurs in their own businesses.

Part-Time Study Options

We also offer Continuing Education courses and certificates in Apparel Pattern Drafting and Fashion Design. You can view these courses at coned.georgebrown.ca (Not equivalent to the full-time program.)

Your Future Study Options

Graduates may be eligible for admission to the George Brown College post-graduate program.

Students who successfully complete this program with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher may be eligible for admission into fashion programs at universities affiliated with the American Apparel & Footwear Association such as the Fashion Institute of Design in Los Angeles and the Fashion Institute of Technology (F.I.T.) at the State University of New York. Students with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher may also be eligible for admission into fashion degree programs at Kwantlen University (Richmond, B.C.).
