Student success in college requires well developed learning skills and attitudes (such as being able to work independently,
participate in a team, be well-organised, develop good work habits, and show initiative). These skills are as important as prior academic
achievement. Applicants should have thoroughly developed these skills and attitudes before beginning their college programs.

OUR PROGRAM
Restoration is one of the key principles of sustainable design. As masonry and brick structures age and decay, there is growing demand for
people who have the skill to restore and revitalize them. Residential, commercial and industrial structures, such as hotels, underground
parking garages, churches, offices, bridges and condominiums, require skilled restoration professionals who understand the building techniques
used at the time of construction, whether five years or a century ago. The Building Restoration Technician two-year program at George Brown
College is the only program in Ontario that addresses the severe shortage of skilled people in the restoration industry.
You will learn the technical and practical skills required to revitalize existing concrete and masonry structures. Courses cover industry-specific
materials, product and material knowledge, compatibility characteristics, new technologies and application principles so that you will be
able to resolve the complex problems of ensuring continued use of threatened highways, stadiums and other structures. Training and work simulations
take place in the fully equipped modern restoration masonry lab, where you will learn brick, block and stone-laying techniques, construction
and restoration of wood frame, veneer, solid and composite walls, concrete installation and repair, stucco and historical building restoration
methods. Business skills such as project management, quantity surveying and estimating are also emphasized. Students will prepare for employment
by completing a field placement with a restoration contractor.
This program is unique in Ontario.
YOUR FUTURE STUDY OPTIONS
The Building Renovation Technician program (T110) shares a common first two semesters. In the second year you have the option of completing
either of the programs, or both T110 and T142 can be completed over a three-year period.
Students may be eligible to proceed to semester 5 of the three-year Building Renovation Technology advanced diploma
program (T148) or the
three-year Construction Engineering Technology advanced diploma program (T105).
Pathways to the Bachelor of Applied Technology degree program are also available from the Building Renovation Technology
(T148) or Construction
Engineering Technology (T105) programs. For more information, see transferguide.georgebrown.ca.
PART-TIME STUDY OPTIONS
Part-time study options are not available for this program; however, our Continuing Education office offers evening courses and part-time
certificate programs in Building/Construction Technologies. See coned.georgebrown.ca.
YOUR CAREER
Graduates find employment in many areas of the restoration and construction industry. Opportunities include restoration technician, restoration
mason, concrete technician, site supervision, project management, estimating, brick and stone mason.
It is expected that the need for qualified restoration technicians will continue to increase as new building technologies require more specialized
restorative techniques.
