Wireless Configuration for Windows XP using Generic Utility
Please note: The screen images shown here are examples. Your displays may vary, depending how your laptop has been configured.
- Logon to your laptop.

- The Windows desktop is displayed:
- Select Start in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.
- Select Control Panel.

Control Panel is displayed.
If Category View is presented (see below) select Switch to Classic View from left panel.

- From Control Panel:
Select Network Connections.

- Network Connections is displayed.
Right-click on Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.

- The General tab of the Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box is displayed.
Select the Wireless Networks tab.

- The Wireless Networks tab is displayed.
- Select GBC from Preferred Networks.
- Tick off the box labelled Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings.
- Click the Properties button.

- The Association tab of the network properties is displayed.
- Verify that the check box labelled The key is provided for me automatically is selected.
(If it is greyed out, then temporarily change the Network Authentication setting from WPA2 to Open, check off The key is provided for me automatically, and change Network Authentication back to WPA2.)
- From the Data Encryption dropdown list select "AES".
(The Network Key and Confirm Network Key fields may be blank.)
- Select the Authentication tab.

- The Authentication tab is displayed.
- From the EAP type dropdown list select Protected EAP (PEAP).
(The two "Authenticate" check boxes must not be selected.)
- Select Properties.

- Protected EAP Properties is displayed.
- Select the Validate server certificate check box.
(Do not check any other boxes.)
- From the Select Authentication Method dropdown list select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2).
- Select Configure.

- The EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties dialog box is displayed.
Ensure that the box below is not ticked.
Click OK.

- A pop-up box is displayed in the bottom right corner of the desktop, prompting for login credentials.
- In the Domain\User Name field enter the domain as 'gbc', followed by a backslash and the User Name (i.e. student number).
For example, student 123456 would enter 'gbc\123456'.
- Enter student PIN in the Password field.
- Click OK.
- Once connectivity is established, the wireless card icon on the Taskbar will turn green, yellow or red, depending on the signal strength.

| Note: | The following message does not indicate a connectivity issue, but rather that the College's filtering software is not permitting access to the web site. Connectivity can be verified by choosing a mainstream site (e.g. www.google.ca). |
